Borne of 3M Innovation - innovation that created industry-leading standards in the past: high capacity data storage tape, Matchprint™ conventional color-proofing systems, laser medical imaging systems and 3.5 inch floppy diskettes. Now we look to the future.
A Heritage of Innovation
We continue that tradition of innovation with Travan™ data cartridges, Rainbow™ digital color proofing systems, DryView™ medical imagers and LS-120 floppy diskettes--among others. Imation began operating with nearly 1,800 technology patents, hundreds of trademarks and thousands of licensing agreements, approximately 10,000 products and plenty of know how. Our intellectual assets include world class capabilities in imaging and color science, high-density memory media and systems, thin film polymer and materials science, optical science dry film and electronic systems and software.
Since Imation's creation, the Company's 1,200 research and development employees have continued that tradition of innovation. In fact, the first patent awarded to Imation covers some of the core technology for Travan data cartridges.
Putting Technology to Work
As we work to harness new technologies for the imaging and information industries, Imation's research and development activities are guided by several important principles:
Focus on customer solutions.
Develop new technologies for the future.
Work collaboratively internally and with strategic partners to create new solutions.
Increase emphasis on digital imaging, high-density data storage and software.
Accelerate our time-to-market through streamlined procedures and global partnerships, alliances, acquisitions, licenses and joint ventures.
Imation now operates five laboratories supporting the business units and two conducting basic research. Imation's central technology organization couples an advanced technology center with a new business incubator to identify new customer needs, evaluate appropriate technologies and focus resources quickly on new product roll-outs to assure their successes.
Similarly, Imation's New Horizons program leverages the knowledge of marketing, sales and research and development teams to identify new, market-focused product ideas, which may then be funded for fast-track development.
Shortly after the new year, Imation announced plans to build a new state-of-the-art technology development center for the digital imaging industry. Discovery Technology Center, housing 800 Imation scientists currently based in 3M sites, will create synergies among Imation scientists across our business units. This helps us accelerate product development and strengthen our leadership in high density digital storage media, color science technology and 'dry' image processes.
Imation's solid technology base, heritage of innovation, talented and dedicated employees and focused R&D effort create a sound foundation for market-leading solutions serving the imaging and information industry.

Travan Development Team: Rob Tapani, Jim Evanoff, LeRoy Kuta, Jim Anderson, Mary Hable, Hung Tran
Shortly after the spin-off, we learned that the patent for Travan minicartridge technology would be the first to be issued in the name of Imation. While our new company will earn many more patents, this first one was symbolic for many of us who had spent years at 3M. Our work started with 3M and continues with Imation as we strengthen the spirit of innovation and teamwork that has always made us a technology leader.Imation's Travan Minicartridge offers tape backup storage from 400MB to 4GB uncompressed. Travan technology delivers innovative design, quality, reliability and performance that has resulted in nearly four million Travan compliant drives shipped from a number of manufacturers.
